A walk through history

Resident Barkivist, Fergus, learning about BMO’s first employee, Henry Stone.

BMO’s Montreal Head Office is a destination for visitors to the Old Port of Montreal. The site is a beautiful heritage neo-classical building, and also hosts our BMO Museum. Originally opened in 1963, our museum tells the story of Canada’s first bank and our evolution over time. It is open to the public, free of charge, Monday to Friday, from 9-5.

The entryway of the museum is modelled after our first office space in 1817, where you can meet our very first employee, Henry Stone, working diligently in his teller’s cage. As visitors continue through the museum, they can view displays about our organization and the ways in which BMO contributed to the growth of the nation, by funding the construction of the Lachine Canal to the Canadian Pacific Railway. Visitors can learn more about our involvement in printing the first Canadian currency prior to the Bank of Canada, as well as our expansion across Canada.

The museum welcomes over 33,000 visitors a year on average, including tourists to Montreal’s Old Port, school groups, customers, as well as employees. Visitors on-site are also encouraged to walk through the historic banking hall, still operating today.
