In 1994, Bank of Montreal became the first Canadian bank listed on the New York Stock Exchange (stock symbol: “BMO”). The original Press Release announced BMO’s intention to be listed and the event is celebrated by a special commemorative medal.

In 2011, BMO announced the acquisition of Marshall & Ilsley Bank, opening up additional business opportunities in the Midwest. Historically based in Wisconsin, M&I dates back to 1847, as seen in Ledger Book #1 in this display case.

BMO’s activities in the US stretch back to 1818 when we opened our first international agency in New York. Our presence in the City of Chicago began in 1861, when a group of local grain merchants invited Bank of Montreal to set up a permanent agency in their city. BMO’s presence in California (through our acquisition of Bank of British North America) dates to 1864.

As our network grew across the U.S. and Canada, BMO became an important driver of for cross-border economic activity. BMO is now a top ten North American bank, and we continue to grow in key U.S. markets. In 2023 we completed the acquisition of Bank of the West (originally Farmers National Gold Bank of San Jose and later First National Bank of San Jose), bringing 1.8 million new customers to BMO. You can see the evolution of Bank of the West here.
