BMO in translation
BMO’s Zero Barriers to Inclusion is an ongoing strategy and part of our Purpose-driven commitment to Boldy Grow the Good in business and life for stronger communities. Recently, BMO introduced the NewStart® Program, which allows newcomers to Canada to open a bank account online before they arrive, easing the transfer of their finances.
Earlier examples of our commitment can be found in historical BMO pamphlets from the mid-20th century that were translated into a wide variety of languages with the aim of helping new immigrants get settled in Canada. They were produced in several languages, including: Dutch, German, Italian, Hungarian, Japanese, and Slovak.
These pamphlets featured key information that newcomers might need to know when moving to a new country. In addition to outlining information about banking, the pamphlets provided a “tip-sheet” on other useful tidbits such as Canadian currency, measurement conversions, and the translations of common words like “milk” and “bread.” The inside of this pamphlet translated into Hungarian shows corresponding images of these common words, along with the Hungarian word in English. BMO is proud to continue to support inclusion and growth as newcomers transition to their new lives in Canada.
